Whats in a name?

It is important that you consider the name of your new company carefully for several reasons. Legal UK company formation insists that your company does not have the same name as another company which is registered with companies’ house. This may seem obvious but it requires a considerable degree of care, because Companies House does not recognise a difference if the only thing which distinguishes your company from another in the process of company registration is the use of plurals, certain punctuation marks, words such as ‘biz’,  the prefix ‘www’  or suffixes such as ‘.com’   or ‘.co.uk’.

The name of your firm must be sufficiently unique even when these factors are completely disregarded.  Furthermore, unless you are professionally qualified, you will not be able to describe your service as a doctors, dentists or indeed any other profession. Additionally, you actually need the approval of the Secretary of State if your company name suggests a connection with the government, a local authority or any devolved administration. If you describe your company as a group, holdings or international company, the veracity of these descriptions must be verified by Companies House.

Last but not least, the name of your company should not be offensive and should contain the suffix ‘Limited ‘or ‘Ltd’.   Company formation and company registration should be relatively simple once you have given your firm a name which is memorable, effective and of course, legally compliant. These rules will actually ensure that you choose a name for your new company which is completely unique and original so you will be legally compliant.
